League History

  • GAASA formed in December 1976 and began play in the spring of 1977
  • 40 teams in four divisions spring 1977
  • 377 teams played in 45 divisions spring of 2011
  • Original clubs:

  • Girl’s divisions not offered until spring 1980
  • The league offered a “DD” division starting in the spring of 1980 for U8 and younger players
  • By 1980 the league had grown to 141 teams and offered “senior” divisions for the first time
  • 1978 spring season started April 8th and ended June 24th with playoffs the following weekend
  • Akron Rubber Bowl was the original site for the league playoffs
  • Approved league affiliation with OYSAN at the February 1977 league meeting. Len Giglio was appointed to serve as the league representative to OYSAN
  • Quote from the league newsletter Spring 1981: “As you can see by the many changes to our schedule, the G.A.A.S.A. has been more than accommodating to date. However this practice will not be able to continue throughout the year.  As the season progresses, schedule change requests will be refused.  Please refrain from asking that a game be changed because a few players will not be available on a certain date…or because a certain player will not be there.”  Some things do not change, even after 31 years.
  • The current Akron Referee Association was started by the GAASA in the spring of 1982. This was in response to unresolved issues with the Akron Chapter of the Referee Association
  • Referee pay in 1982 was: $12/14/16/18, depending on the level of play and if a Senior division

  • In November 1982 the league proposed a restructuring of the league due to the continued growth of the league:
    • Drop its lowest division, “C”, and encourage its members with teams in the division to create their own in-house competition
    • The establishment of “premier” divisions within each age group
  • OYSAN budget figures:
    • 1991: Income-$90k/Expenses-$89k;
    • 1998: Income-$241k/Expenses-$245k
    • 2011: Income-$239k/Expenses-$206k
  • In 1999 the GAASA Board of Directors totaled 11 positions which included four positions serving the adult divisions.
  • SoccerWorks became the league’s official player registration program in 1999. It was originally distributed to clubs on floppy disks (anybody remember these) who would then bring the disks to player registration.
  • Map books distributed for the last time in the spring of 1999. Maps went online starting with the fall season
  • League establishes the position of Executive Director in 2002
